With summer in full swing and embracing the season of giving, it is also time to stop and reflect on the past and look forward to the future. As the season of giving envelopes us with its warmth, we are reminded of generosity's extraordinary power.
Giving isn’t merely an act of charity. It’s a ripple effect that touches lives far beyond our immediate reach. You are giving back by sharing your time, devotion, care and compassion.
In a world that sometimes feels divided, giving to those in need rekindles our shared humanity, grounding us in compassion and solidarity.
“Always give without remembering and always receive without forgetting …” – anon.
Doing it for “the girls”…
We spent the month of October raising awareness of breast cancer and doing our bit to contribute to this worthy cause – and those affected by this dreadful disease – with our in-branch collection of pre-loved bra’s.
As Angelina Jolie said,“It is possible to take control and tackle head-on any health issue. You can seek advice, learn about the options and make choices that are right for you. Knowledge is power."
October may be over, but the conversation about breast cancer shouldn’t be. Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women globally and represents approximately a quarter of all cancers that occur in women every year. With one in six cancer deaths in women worldwide, breast cancer is also the leading cause of cancer deaths among women worldwide.
Know the risks
The most common risk factors for breast cancer include increasing age, being obese, limited physical activity, alcohol use and using certain types of post-menopausal hormonal replacement. There are other established risk factors such as a history of previous radiation and risk factors that relate to a woman’s choice to bear children and to breast feed. Only about 5-10% of breast cancers have a hereditary risk.
Take action
The majority of breast cancers occurs in women with no specific risk factor apart from being female and increasing age. For women of all ages, it is important to be aware of changes in your breast and for those who are above 40 or 50 years old, a mammogram may be recommended in health care settings with adequate screening services.
Close the care gap
There is a 60% survival difference between women with breast cancer living in high-income countries as compared to those living in low-and-middle income countries. Additionally, 70% of breast cancer deaths happen in resource-limited settings due to challenges in access to early detection, timely diagnosis and comprehensive treatment.
Keep the conversation going
Advocate, contribute and act to empower and support those with breast cancer, no one should face breast cancer alone.
