Dr Michelle Blom writes:
Often during skin consultations and when prescribing peels, patients ask me whether it is true that peels thin your skin. The practise and concept of peeling and exfoliating with various types of resurfacing agents have been around for many, many years.
From using a pumice stone or volcanic ash to scrub off dull or hard skin, to using lemon juice to brighten up the skin and to Cleopatra bathing in milk – the concept is not a new one.
Lemons contain citric acid, a common acid used for skin brightening and mild resurfacing and milk contains lactic acid, a commonly used acid in chemical resurfacing and skin hydration still used today.
